Had Braces Before? Your Smile May Just Need a Touch-Up!

If you had braces or Invisalign in the past and have noticed your teeth shifting, you’re not alone. Teeth can move over time, especially if you haven’t been able to wear your retainer as recommended. The good news is that you may not need comprehensive orthodontic treatment all over again.

For some adults, Invisalign touch-up treatment can provide the minor corrections needed to bring teeth back into alignment. Clear aligners can be a convenient, discreet option for addressing certain types of orthodontic relapse, depending on how much your teeth have shifted and whether your bite has changed.

At Insoft & Hurst Orthodontics, we’ll evaluate your teeth and bite to determine what’s causing the movement and what type of treatment makes the most sense for your smile. Whether you need a new retainer, a short course of Invisalign, or more comprehensive orthodontic treatment, we’ll help you understand your options and create a plan that’s right for you.

Frequently Asked Questions About Braces for Adults

They don’t have to. We understand that many adults want to improve their smiles without making orthodontic treatment the focus of their professional or social lives. At Insoft and Hurst Orthodontics, we offer several discreet treatment options, including Invisalign clear aligners and Damon Clear braces. During your consultation, we’ll help you compare your options and choose an approach that fits your smile goals and lifestyle.

Yes. Depending on your orthodontic needs, Invisalign may be an alternative to adult braces. Invisalign uses a series of custom-made, removable aligners to gradually move your teeth. Dr. Insoft and Dr. Hurst will evaluate your teeth and bite to determine whether clear aligners can achieve the results you’re looking for or whether braces would be a better choice.

Absolutely. It’s common for teeth to shift after orthodontic treatment, particularly if retainers aren’t worn as recommended. If your teeth have moved since your first treatment, Dr. Insoft and Dr. Hurst can evaluate your current alignment and recommend the appropriate solution. Depending on the amount of movement, you may be a candidate for a new retainer, Invisalign touch-up treatment, or more comprehensive orthodontic treatment.

In many cases, yes. Adults often come to us with dental work that has been completed over the years, including crowns, bridges, implants, or other restorations. Having dental work doesn’t automatically rule out orthodontic treatment, but it does make an individualized evaluation especially important. Dr. Insoft and Dr. Hurst will assess your teeth, restorations, bite, and overall oral health before recommending a treatment plan.

You’ll have some temporary dietary adjustments, but you won’t have to give up your favorite foods forever. With traditional braces, we recommend avoiding hard, sticky, or chewy foods that can damage brackets or wires. Dr. Insoft and Dr. Hurst will give you specific instructions for protecting your braces, and most patients quickly get used to eating with them. If you choose Invisalign, you can remove your aligners when eating, so there are fewer food restrictions.

You don’t have to wait until you have a major orthodontic problem to benefit from treatment. Many adults seek orthodontic care because they want to feel more confident about their smile, while others want to address crowding, spacing, or bite concerns that have bothered them for years. Dr. Insoft and Dr. Hurst will look at both the appearance and function of your smile and help you determine whether treatment would provide meaningful benefits for you. If you’re unsure whether orthodontic treatment is worth it, a consultation is a good place to start.
