Traditional Braces vs. Damon System Braces: How Are They Different?

If you’re thinking about braces, you’ve probably come across the Damon System™ and wondered how it’s different from traditional braces.

The best choice depends on your smile, your goals, and your orthodontic needs.

At Insoft & Hurst Orthodontics, we proudly offer both traditional metal braces and Damon self-ligating braces.

Whether you’re looking for an orthodontist in St. Pete or Seminole, or you’re searching for Damon braces near you, here’s what you should know before making your decision.

TL;DR: Traditional Braces Vs. Damon Braces

  • Both traditional braces and Damon braces straighten teeth effectively.
  • Damon braces use a special slide mechanism instead of elastic ties to hold the archwire in place.
  • Traditional braces use small elastic ties (or colored rubber bands) around each bracket.
  • Both systems can treat crowded teeth, gaps, overbite, underbite, and many other bite problems.

Traditional Braces vs. Damon Braces: What’s the difference?

Both traditional braces and the Damon System are designed to straighten teeth and correct bite problems like crowding, spacing, overbites, underbites, and more.

The biggest difference isn’t what they treat; it’s how the brackets hold the archwire throughout treatment.

Think of the archwire as the guide that gradually moves your teeth.

  • Traditional braces hold that wire tightly in place with small elastic ties.
  • Damon braces use a built-in sliding mechanism rather than elastic ties to hold the archwire in place.

Traditional Braces

  • Small elastic ties hold the archwire in each bracket
  • Patients can choose colorful or clear elastic ties
  • Elastic ties are replaced during adjustment appointments
  • Available with metal or clear brackets

Damon® Braces

  • A built-in passive slide (“clip”) mechanism holds the archwire instead of elastic ties (Damon brackets have a tiny built-in door, or clip, that closes over the wire.)
  • The archwire can move more freely within each bracket
  • Colored elastic ties can be placed for decorative purposes if you’d like!
  • Available in both metal and Damon Clear™ bracket options

Both systems are highly effective. The best choice depends on your smile, treatment goals, and personal preferences.

Are Damon Braces faster?

Treatment time depends on the complexity of your case, your bite, how well you wear prescribed elastics, and your body’s natural response to tooth movement.

The Damon System’s passive slide mechanism allows the archwire to move more freely within each bracket, which may allow for more efficient tooth movement in some cases.

However, no orthodontist can guarantee faster treatment simply because of the type of brackets used.

Are Damon Braces more comfortable and easier to clean?

Both traditional braces and Damon braces are designed to move teeth with gentle, controlled forces, so some soreness is normal after adjustments or when changing to a new wire.

Because Damon braces use a passive slide mechanism instead of elastic ties, some patients report a comfortable treatment experience and find them a little easier to brush around. Good oral hygiene is important with either system.

No matter which braces you choose, be sure to:

  • Brush after meals
  • Floss daily
  • Keep regular dental cleanings
  • Follow your orthodontist’s instructions

Healthy teeth and gums help ensure the best treatment results.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between traditional braces and Damon braces?

Traditional braces use elastic ties to hold the wire inside each bracket. Damon braces may feel comfortable for some patients, but comfort varies from person to person. Both Damon and traditional braces use controlled forces to move teeth, and some soreness is normal during treatment.

Are Damon braces better than traditional braces?

Both are excellent treatment options. The right choice depends on your orthodontic needs, lifestyle, and treatment goals.

Do Damon braces hurt less?

Some patients report that Damon braces feel more comfortable because they use lighter forces, but every patient experiences tooth movement differently.

Are Damon Clear Braces the same as Invisalign?

No. Damon Clear Braces still use brackets and wires attached to your teeth. Invisalign uses removable clear aligners without brackets or wires.
